Cathedral Peak Hotel

Accommodation - Cathedral Peak Hotel 1

Catering for a young, active market, this hotel is traditionally used as a base for hikers owing to its stunning location close to the high peaks in the Mlambonja River Valley in the Central Drakensberg.  It’s also very popular with families.  Other than Didima Camp, run by KZN Wildlife, located slightly further away from the peaks, and hidden from view, The Cathedral Peak Hotel is the only hotel in the valley, lending this corner of the park an uncluttered feel.  For those seeking to walk straight from the doorstep, straight into big terrain, this is the place to be.

The hotel is an attractive, rambling 1930’s building set over two levels, and is surprisingly friendly and intimate, despite its size.  A great variety of walks and hikes can be undertaken in the immediate vicinity, and there is a guided hike on offer every day – you can climb Cathedral Peak (3004m) itself with a hotel guide on Wednesdays and Saturdays, although this is grueling 9 hour outing for the seriously fit only. The hotel has recently achieved its fourth star (2009), which it has been working very hard to achieve. Most of the rooms are classified as deluxe (the old “standards” have recently been converted and upgraded), and include inter-leading family units.  Superior rooms are very well equipped private thatched bungalows tucked away among the trees, and have the best views.  The hotel also has a 9-hole golf course, a well-equipped gym and a heated and non-heated swimming pool.

Note: this hotel gets very booked up at peak times – it pays to book early!
