The Hoerikwaggo Trail

Panoramic - heading for McLears Beacon

The Hoerikwaggo Trail is a formal trail running the full length of the Cape Peninsula - starting with a steep climb up Table Mountain (named Hoerikwaggo, meaning "mountain of the sea" by the San people), this is a superb 5 day trek that follows the spine of the Cape Peninsula mountains all the way to Cape Point.  Having summitted Mclear's Beacon (the mountain's highest point) you’ll then head south along a beautiful and varied route that takes in the very best features of the Peninsula, experiencing dramatic and varied views as you proceed.  You’ll pass over many of the Peninsula’s high points, as well as experience the immediate coastal terrain, including the mostly deserted, 8-kilometre Noordhoek beach, and the lovely cliff-top trail past the alluring peaks of Judas Peak, Die Boer, and Paulsberg in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve near Cape Point.

What’s special?

  • The route straddles the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, with extensive sea views east and west - Whale sightings are almost guaranteed between June and November

  • One group at a time on the trail.  With the exception of Table Mountain, you will see few hikers en route, and no other group treks

  • Experience the unique Cape Floral Kingdom close-up

  • Stay in uniquely designed camps (one has been constructed using whale bones!) that have been set up for sole use of trails groups. This is the only way hikers are able to sleep out in the reserve.

  • Full logistical support, including transport to the start of the trail and back from Cape Point, and movement of all main luggage as you proceed – no hire car required

  • Fully guided and catered - all meals are organised and prepared by the guide

Basics

  • Accommodation - the camps accommodate a maximum of 12, and each group on the trail has exclusive use of each camp as they proceed southwards. These camps are the only ones located in the Cape Peninsula Reserves, and there is no public access.  For example, the first night is spent in Orange Kloof Tented Camp, which nestles in the ancient Afromontane forest of Orange Kloof, which is a restricted area

  • Group size - Maximum 12, minimum 4

  • Timing - The trail is run on a formal basis and requires 5 days to complete.  Treks are run from Sundays to Thursdays, provided a minimum of four persons are going.  However, the trek can be run for two persons provided they agree to cover the cost for four.

  • Terrain - Straightforward paths (some laid stone and occasional boardwalks) over undulating terrain.  Some steep climbs

  • Grade - Strenuous. Participants will need to be fit, covering up to 18km per day

  • Style - Fully supported and catered, with guide.  Luggage is carried between camps by vehicle, transfers pre and post trek

Alternatives

Not everybody wants to join a formal 5-day trail, commencing on a Sunday and ending on a Thursday.   If you wish to hike on the Cape Peninsula, consider the following:

  • Do a 2 or 3 day trail on one or more of the key stages of the Hoerikwaggo Trail.  These can be run for a minimum of two persons on dates that suit you, subject to hut availability. Click here for more.

  • Go on a 3-day, private, fully-catered trail from Silvermine to Cape Point (the southern half of the trail) – these can be run for a minimum of 4 persons. Click here for more

  • Explore the myriad of excellent day hikes from your hotel, or bed and breakfast in Cape Town – we can advise on routes and arrange guides, packed lunches, and logistics where necessary to help you get the best out of this beautiful area. Click here for more.
