Zambia has evolved into a safari destination more slowly than its neighbours in Southern Africa, and vast tracts of this large country fall beyond the radar of all but the most adventurous of travellers. Since the demise of Zimbabwe, Zambia has taken the initiative, and tourism services have grown rapidly in Victoria Falls and some of its major reserves, so filling the void. Today, there’s much on offer for the safari enthusiast, and happily, some of its wilderness areas feel very remote; the country offers excellent opportunities for adventure and exploring wilderness off-the-beaten track.
In our view, this is one of the major draws of travelling to Zambia. The Luangwa Valley is the home of the walking safari, where it all started, and is arguably THE place to undertake this type of safari in Africa. If your thing is walking in the bush in the company of experienced guides with strong attitudes to safety, in small groups, and in unspoiled, remote bushveld, then look no further! The Luangwa valley is the perfect place to connect with the wider surroundings of the bush and all the subtle pleasures it offers ....... click here for more
Uppermost on the minds on many visitors is the chance to visit Victoria Falls. It's readily accessible from Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, and many a traveller’s itinerary in Zambia starts and ends here. Although the Falls provide the main focus, there’s more on offer; excellent lodges positioned along the river, the sprawling upper Zambezi fringed by riverine reserve and explorable small boat or canoe; thrills and spills in a number of forms, including one of the best sections of commercially-runnable rapids world-wide, directly below the falls.
Lower Zambezi Valley
Downstream of Lake Kariba, towards Mozambique, the mesmerizing and continuously changing Zambezi river meanders more slowly through a wide floodplain, before cutting through a final gorge close to the border with Mozambique. The walls of the Zambezi escarpment, set a long way back from the river, form a natural enclosure to a vast wildlife sanctuary, which is formally protected by the Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe, and the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia. This is one of Zambia’s main safari destinations, and is also the focus for more adventurous, multi-day canoeing safaris.
